Situation

At the suggestion of its CEO, our client, a medium sized company with approximately 150 IS staff members, retained us to perform an independent assessment of the capability and maturity of the IS organization. All aspects of the IS function, with the exception of the computer operations center, were to be assessed. This included user interface, systems support, systems development, quality assurance and the relationship of IS with the executive committee.

Actions Taken

Our consultants benchmarked the IS organization against industry best practices, Baldrige criteria, and the key processes of ISO9003 and the Capability Maturity Model of the Software Engineering Institute. We recast the assessment from a "report card" to an improvement blueprint for IS, working openly and closely with the VP-IS and his staff. We issued produced a comprehensive 125 page assessment and improvement plan and presented it to the executive committee headed by the President and attended by IS management. Having developed a positive working relationship with the IS team by the time the study completed, we were instrumental in assisting IS management to strengthen their department. The total time from certification initiation to presenting the final report was 9 weeks.

Results Obtained

The study completed on time and within our original estimates. Our report was instrumental to executive management, allowing them to have a detailed understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of their IS organization as they related to the IS organizations of peer companies. IS was able to obtain support for several improvements to their organization structure, development methods and support procedures. SMR was retained by IS management for two subsequent assignments.
