Situation

Our client was one of the 10 largest insurance companies in the US. A large software project intended to replace their existing policy billing systems with a single state-of-the-art system was stalled, due to the lack of an integrated project plan and control system. We were contacted by their Director of Information Systems and asked to produce an integrated approach to the project.

Actions Taken

Our consultant, who was a very experienced project manager, recognized that simply producing a project plan and recommendations would not provide a permanent solution. Instead he chose to work with the existing client project manager to introduce new project planning tools and techniques to the organization. Working with the client's staff and the staff of a software vendor that was supplying part of the necessary software, our consultant implemented new project planning and control software, developed a multi phased implementation approach, integrated IS, user and vendor personnel into the approach, prepared a series of manageable sub-project plans, established a project reporting and control mechanism, obtained buy-in on the new plan, and trained the client's staff to use the new tools and techniques. He then supported them as they managed the project.

Results Obtained

The reorganized project completed within budget and ahead of plan. The software vendor obtained a strong reference for the software component that they supplied. Client managers then "cloned" the new project management tools and techniques for use in all future projects. Multiple and long lasting benefits to the company resulted from this assignment. The client IS Director was promoted to the VP-IS position.
